SCAM ALERT: Fake DWP Messages Targeting Disabled People

A new scam is doing the rounds — and it’s targeting people on benefits, including disabled claimants in Northern Ireland.

People have reported receiving text messages claiming to be from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), urging them to click a link to report a “change in circumstances.” The message suggests that failing to act could lead to loss of benefits.

Let’s be clear: this is a scam.

These messages are not from the DWP, and clicking the link could put your personal data, benefit payments, and bank information at risk. The scammers are preying on people who already rely on the welfare system — people who are more likely to be anxious about losing their support.

How to protect yourself:

  • Do not click on any links in unsolicited texts or emails claiming to be from the DWP.
  • The DWP will never ask for personal or banking information via text.
  • If you’re unsure whether a message is real, contact the DWP directly using official channels.
  • Report suspicious messages to Action Fraud or ScamwiseNI.

Disabled people in Northern Ireland already face enough barriers without scammers adding more stress. Stay alert, talk to your community, and share this warning.

If you’re worried about any changes to your benefits, contact a trusted organisation like Advice NI or Welfare Changes Helpline for guidance — not a random text.

Your benefits are your right. Don’t let scammers take them from you.
